What Mesh Critter Guard Actually Does
Solar panels sit a few inches above the roof surface. That gap is warm, dry, sheltered from hawks — and in a Chicagoland winter, it's the best real estate on your block if you're a squirrel.

What Bird Proofing Actually Does
Bird proofing addresses the birds you can see: pigeons lined up along the top edge of your array, starlings using the frame as a perch, droppings streaking down the glass.
The method depends on the species and your roof:
- Bird spikes along panel edges and the adjacent roofline stop birds from landing at all
- Bird netting closes off access routes birds use to reach the array
- Panel-edge deterrent strips make the frame itself an unusable perch
Why it matters more than it looks: a single dropping over one cell can cut output of the entire panel string by 30–40% because of how series circuits work — and droppings baked on through a summer create hot spots that can permanently damage cells. How to Tell Which One You Need
Signs you need mesh critter guard:
- Scratching or scurrying sounds from the roof, especially at dusk and dawn
- Twigs, leaves, or nesting material poking out from under panel edges
- Chewed or hanging wires visible below the array
- Squirrels regularly running your roofline (Honey Locust, oak, and maple trees nearby make this near-certain)
Signs you need bird proofing:
- Birds visibly perched on the panels or the ridge above them
- Droppings on the panel glass — especially streaks running down from the top edge
- Droppings concentrated on one or two panels (that's a perch directly above)
- A production drop in your solar app that cleaning fixes only temporarily
Signs you need both: all of the above at once — common near the North Shore's lakefront migration corridor and anywhere with mature tree cover. Birds nest under the panels in spring and perch on top year-round.
